Thunder Out

from Thunder Out by Salt Thief

lyrics

He stole an ancient Caravan; dirty, stubborn goat
Dropped his bullets in the gas tank and he left behind the coast
He was running fast from destiny and running from his dreams
He thought he'd find salvation in that ragged old machine

But an hour out of Edmonton he passed out at the wheel
Woke up on the rumble strip, woke up feeling real
Give that boy a cigarette, no time to catch his breath
He'll be wide awake til Winnipeg, dreaming bout his death

So he cooked a pot of rocket fuel, strained it through a comb
Sucked it back like water and it lit him to the bone
By the time it cleared his bloodstream yeah all he knew was go
An endless mile from nowhere on the left side of the road

And he drank a sea of alcohol a bottle at a time
I say, “Better stick to water if you cannot draw a line.”
But the opposite of self-control is doing what you're told
And he's so fast at living, couldn't dream of growing old

But those thick black clouds were rolling in, the wind was blowing cold
Tires broke for summer and thunder on the road
When the rain is pouring solid on the glass too thick to see
Stick your head out of the window, taste the hundred mile breeze

All that hot adrenaline broke something in his brain
He was surely seeing things, hearing voices in the rain
A wicked demon closing in, a shadow taking form
A million charging buffalo electric in the storm

Praise the storm and brace for thunder
Haul away all your illusion oh haul away slumber
Open, sky, reveal your wonder
Thunder out all of your mystery oh thunder out!

He roared on through the thunderstorm, a ghost behind the wheel
Devil on his shoulder in a coffin made of steel
Folks who heard him coming got down on their knees and prayed
Shutter all your windows if you want another day

It was a blind and lame messiah who finally took him down
Picked a stone up off the asphalt and layed him on the ground
Said, "He's done his time of breathin and he's gotta learn to share.
That's a whole damn lot of buffalo and not a lot of air."
